Google has released a new app for iOS and Android called Google Currents (free, App Store link) – a magazine-like news reading app to compete with the recently updated Flipboard and other similar apps.
Currents is highly customizable, allowing users to set up their news feeds and flip through stories in a clean, simple way, and includes content from over 150 different publishers.
What’s unique about Currents is that it includes a feature called Google Trending Editions, which allows users to read the top five trending articles in each topic to quickly get up to speed with what’s happening.
Also notable is that Currents includes a self-service platform to allow any publisher of any size to post their own content, and publishers can choose to add Google Analytics to their content to gather useful data about who’s reading their content, popularity, and so forth.
