A recent patent application has revealed that Apple could be considering facial recognition technology for their future iPods, iPads and iPhones, Apple Insider reports. The application, entitled “Low Threshold Face Recognition”, describes a new solution for accurately recognising a user.
Apple Insider reports that:
Its solution would reduce the impact of lighting conditions and biometric distortions on an image. The filing describes a “low-computation solution for reasonably effective (low threshold) face recognition that can be implemented on camera-equipped consumer portable appliances.”
In September 2010, Apple was rumored to have acquired a Swedish facial recognition company, Polar Rose, so this might be an idea under serious consideration.
