Steve Jobs is often recognized for bringing rich graphical user interfaces to personal computers, but the hard-working designers that crafted those original interface designs are rarely recognized or given credit.
One such designer is Susan Kare. Kare developed a number of icons and interface elements for the original Mac OS, and remnants of her work can still be seen in OS X today.
The folks at PLoS published an article a couple of days ago showing her early work on Mac icons, most of which was done using a pen and graph paper in order to get the pixels just right (remember: this was before the days of design software).
If you have any interest at all in Apple history (or in giving designers the credit they’re due), head on over to FOS to check out their entire showcase and article.
