Nokia was dealt a blow by Telefonica, one of the main European telephone carriers, earlier today when they announced that their new Lumia smartphones were “too expensive”. Speaking to Telecoms.com, Simon Lee Smith, the European General Manager for devices at Telefonica, also claimed that the phones are “not yet at the right price point”.
Smith insisted that Nokia was “beginning to listen” to its carrier customers and that Nokia’s phones would be “more commercially effective” in the New Year. According to Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, a sim-free Lumia will retail for about 580 dollars.
With the overpricing of their new device, it seems Nokia have already fallen behind in the race to catch up with the iPhone and Android. They will have to recover quickly in what has proven to be an unforgiving and highly pressurised smartphone market.
