Despite the widely-anticipated release of the iPhone 4S causing many customers to resist purchasing iPhones, NPD reports that the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3GS remained the two top selling devices in the U.S. during the third quarter.
It’s significant that the iPhone 4 (and more so the 3GS) was able to outrank the mass of Android smartphones as the United States’ best-selling devices even though Apple was experiencing lower-than-expected sales at the time (due to rumors of the iPhone 4S launch).
Continued steady sales of current iPhone handsets saw Apple once again top the charts. The top five best-selling mobile handsets for the July-September quarter are as follows:
Apple also maintained the top two slots through the second quarter of the year, even though the iPhone 3GS was coming up on its second birthday. The iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3GS continue to be extremely popular even now, and at their new lower prices of just $99 one a two-year contract for the iPhone 4, and a free 3GS on a 2-year contract, they’ll likely continue topping the charts among lower-priced devices for some time to come.
