The Galaxy Nexus went on sale in the U.K. last week, and tests show the new smartphone outperforms the iPhone 4S in certain areas. In other news, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak was spotted grabbing an early copy of the Galaxy Nexus at Google’s campus.
AppleInsider reports that the device, the result of a partnership between Google and Samsung, beat out the iPhone 4S on the SunSpider Javascript benchmark and the Rightware BrowserMark. Anandtech obtained the results of several tests on the device.
The Galaxy Nexus contains the Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 processor and the Imagination Technologies PowerVR SGX 540 GPU.
The 4S did outpace the Nexus in the graphics department, performing better in the GLBenchmark 2.1 Egypt and Pro tests. The iPhone 4S uses the A5 processor, which makes use of the dual-core SGX 543MP2 GPU from Imagination Technologies.
“Google really pushed the performance of its software further with Ice Cream Sandwich, while GPU performance is limited by the SGX 540. The good news is that there’s more than enough hardware at ICS’ disposal to deliver a smooth experience,” the report concluded.
Google and Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Nexus along with Ice Cream Sandwich, (Android 4.0,) last month. The U.S. launch date was set for later this month, but speculation is that it has been shoved back to December.
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak already has his hands on the device, he was spotted grabbing one up at Google headquarters in Mountain View, CA. Wozniak was invited to pick it up after tweeting that he was looking for one at Best Buy. Wozniak has an admitted “keen interest” in devices such as the iPhone and the Galaxy Nexus, claiming he sometimes has as many as 10 phones with him.
