Following previous reports detailing a possible new self-checkout method at Apple Retail Stores, Apple has now updated their Apple Store app (App Store link) for iOS to include support for self-checkout, in-store pickup of items ordered online, and a new order tracking feature.
Among other things, the app now allows anyone to checkout at an Apple Retail Store simply by using their iPhone’s camera to scan barcodes of shelved items, and then purchase the items using their Apple ID. This should make it easier to shop at the Apple Store, as it eliminates the need to flag down a retail employee to pay for most purchases.
Version 2.0 of the Apple Store iOS app is available now by updating through iTunes, or for those who have not yet downloaded the app, it is a free download, and available immediately through the App Store (free, App Store Link). The full change log follows.
What’s New in Version 2.0
- Personal Pickup: Buy in the app and choose to pick up your order at any Apple Retail Store. Most in-stock orders are available for pickup within an hour. (U.S. only)
- EasyPay: Purchase select accessories in store quickly by scanning the barcode and completing your transaction right in the app. (U.S. only, requires iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S)
- Track your stuff: View the status of current and previous orders from the order status section in the More tab.
- Additional international support (Canada, China).
