A huge strike has taken place at the supplier of Apple’s keyboards in Shenzen, China, reports Yahoo Finance. Hundreds of riot police were called in after 1,000 workers walked out on the factory, owned by the Jingyuan Computer Group, and put up a blockade on the highway.
The normal hours for staff at the plant were 100 to 120 hours overtime, which compared to the common working hours in the Western world is absolutely huge. A high rate of workplace injuries, mass layoffs of older workers and verbal abuse from the managers was also reported to have taken place.
The strike ended after the factory (which also makes components for IBM) promised to reduce the amount of overtime. It is not expected that this incident should cause delays in production, but it is shocking to see that even the factories who produce products for the world’s biggest companies have been treating their workers unfairly.
