Google announced a major update for its Google TV platform today, called Google TV Take Two. The update, which features a streamlined interface as well as support for more Android Marketplace apps, will be available for some existing Google TV devices starting next week.
The official Google blog post on the update states that Google will be focusing the update to address four main areas of user feedback:Next week’s updates are said by Google to focus on four areas of user feedback: Simplicity, finding content, improving the YouTube experience, and bringing more apps to the device.
The way the update will handle apps is interesting – Google is opening the set up to the Android Market, and Android developers will be able to adapt their current apps to the Google TV, potentially bringing a lot of quality apps to the device if developers decide to support it. 50 developers are already said to have created or modified apps to work on the Google TV platform.
Now that Google TV has a solid way of supporting apps…where are the Apple TV apps? Sure, the Apple TV has mirroring, but that’s not the same as a dedicated app in my opinion, especially for content-related apps such as Hulu (although Hulu doesn’t work on the Google TV either).
