With the launch of iOS 5 right around the corner, and deep Twitter integration along with it, GigaOM reports that Twitter VP of Engineering Michael Abbott has stated that Twitter is ready for iOS 5, despite the extra traffic it will bring to their servers.
According to Abbott, Twitter has been bolstering their servers and making changes in their infrastructure for the past 9 months in preparation for significant political, celebrity, or other events that could cause a huge boost in traffic to their servers:
During the last nine months, there’s been more infrastructure changes at Twitter than there had been in the previous five years at the company, so that whether it be the death of bin Laden, or someone announces a pregnancy, we can handle those issues and you’re not seeing a fail whale.
Although Twitter has gone down before as a result of less significant events than the launch of iOS 5, I’m glad to hear they’ve been working on their servers, and am hopeful that they’ll be able to handle the added challenge without breaking a sweat.
