Following our previous report that Apple had ordered 10 million iPhone 5 units for launch, DigiTimes reports that Apple has now placed orders for a total of 56 million iPhones to last them through 2011, up from a previous goal of 50 million.
The 56 million units cover both the iPhone 4 and previous-generation models such as the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. The iPhone 5, however, is expected to account for at least half of Apple’s phone shipments for the latter half of 2011.
The iPhone 5 will go on sale this fall, and the most recent major rumors suggest it will be launched on October 7. The next-generation phone is widely expected to contain Apple’s A5 processor, an 8MP camera with 1080p HD video recording abilities, and a larger screen.
