Yesterday, software developer Intego announced the immediate availability of VirusBarrier for iOS ($2.99, App Store Link) – an anti-virus and anti-malware app. It allows users of iOS devices to scan email attachments for malware and viruses that might target desktop computers.
In addition to email attachments, the app can scan remote servers, and files stored on iOS devices, can scan Zip archives, and can help protect you against phishing scams. The app auto-updates its malware definitions.
Personally, while I am intrigued by this idea, I consider this app to be completely unnecessary – why run an antivirus on your iPhone, wasting precious processor and memory resources, when anyone who would receive a file from your iPhone should be protecting their computer themselves?
Nevertheless, if you think you need or want an app like this, Intego VirusBarrier iOS is available now for the cost of $2.99 (App Store Link), and annual subscriptions cost just $1.99 per year.
