I suppose it was only a matter of time on this one – those of you that have been using Macs for a while might remember Apple’s OS X Downloads page. It stood for years as a resource to new users for finding the best Mac apps. Now, as of tonight, it is no more.
If you wander on over to http://www.apple.com/downloads/, you’ll notice that in place of the Mac apps that were there before, you instead see a pretty, shiny banner telling you about the Mac App Store. The page still serves as a resource for downloading Dashboard widgets and Safari extensions.
Frankly, I am surprised it took so long for Apple to K-O the OS X downloads page – although I must confess that page was a godsend to me when I was new to the Mac many years ago, the Mac App Store now serves the same purpose, and does a better job of it.
What are your thoughts? Sad to see it go? Happy to see Apple get rid of it? Sound off in the comments!
