We’ve just heard that today Yahoo has unveiled a new search engine specifically for mobile apps. The search can either take place on a new section of their existing search engine, or in a new free iOS app that they just released.
This is the first time I am aware of that a search company has made a specific effort to include mobile apps in their searches. The new search services comb through iTunes links and app descriptions, but also surface additional web content, such as news, reviews, and ratings that relate to the app you are searching for.
The app can provide personal recommendations, and narrow searches down to particular app categories. Currently, the app only indexes iPhone and iPod Touch apps, and Yahoo plans to begin indexing iPad apps, FaceBook apps, Twitter apps, and other similar offerings in the near future. Presently, the app search engine indexes Android apps as well.
You can check it out for yourself by visiting their new app-specific search site (Yahoo! App Search) or by downloading their newly available free iPhone app (Yahoo! AppSpot, iTunes Store Link)
