According to a recent report, Apple may be planning to ship over 8 million MacBook Airs in the third quarter of 2011. If true, this would mean that Apple hopes to sell twice as many MacBook Airs in the next three months than they did all Macs total in the Q2.
DigiTimes, who put out the report, cites sources within Apple’s supply chain, and states that the combined total production of MacBooks was increased to up to 2.4 million units in June, and Apple is expected to product between 2.7-2.8 million MacBook Airs in July.
The MacBook Air is certainly due for a refresh, with many rumors suggesting new models could come sometime in July, alongside the release of OS X Lion. The new models are expected to be equipped with new Sandy Bridge processors and support for Apple and Intel’s new Thunderbolt I/O data transfer technology.
This spec boost, combined with the July release of OS X Lion, is expected to produce a significant surge in MacBook Air sales, but the projected target of 8 million units does seem a but steep, and perhaps a bit unrealistic.
What are your thoughts? Are you planning to buy one of the projected 8 million MacBook Airs? Sound off in the comments!
