Is Your MobileMe Subscription About To Expire? Don’t Renew Just Yet!

If you’re a user of Apple’s MobileMe, and you’re coming up for renewal, you just might want to hold off for a while. Apple’s World-Wide Developer Conference is in just a few days, starting on June 6, and there’s some chance the service will see a (possibly cheaper) update there.

There have been rumors every year about a cheaper or even free MobileMe service, which have typically suggested that Apple will begin offering more basic services (like email, over-the-air syncing, and so forth) for free, while paying subscribers will get extra features.

This year’s big deal is the possible unveiling of iCloud, Apple’s digital music locker, and many are thinking that it might finally be the year that Apple bridges MobileMe into paid and free categories. There’s already precedent for making certain parts of MobileMe free. Find My iPhone/iPad used to be a service for MobileMe subscribers only, but last November Apple made it free to anyone with an iPad, iPhone 4 or current-gen iPod touch.

In the end, the advice we’d offer is to wait until WWDC is over before renewing your MobileMe subscription. You might end up sad if you don’t.
