iOS 5 May Free iPad From Its PC Dependency

The iPad has received criticism and head-turns for requiring a computer running iTunes in order to set up and use it, making it less viable as a replacement for a personal computer. 9to5Mac reports that this may change with iOS 5.

Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac reports that iOS 5 will include support for over-the-air updates to wireless devices, which means you won’t have to plug your iDevice into a PC to get the latest firmware. Such a move would in interesting, as other platforms, such as Android, already do this.

It’ll be interesting to find out just what this will mean. Will iPads still require PC’s to set them up? Will they gain the ability to sync wirelessly? Only time will tell.
