According to Bloomberg, Apple will begin selling a white model of the iPhone 4 in the next few weeks after a 10-month delay. They cite “people familiar with the plans” and claim that the new device will be available by the end of April.
The new version will be available from both ATT and Verizon Wireless, according to the report, and the reason for the extensive delay was manufacturing challenges, including white paint that tended to peel under heat.
Last month, Phil Schiller confirmed with a tweet to a customer that a white iPhone 4 would indeed be available n the spring, and called it a “beauty. The release was delayed multiple times in the past due to supposed production issues, but the exact reason hasn’t even been revealed by Apple.
It’s not clear at this point whether the unit will launch by the end of April only in United States, or internationally as well. Apple was also rumored to be considering a white version of the iPhone 5 for a summer 2011 launch, although recent rumors about a “delayed” iPhone 5 in September with a WWDC focused on software doesn’t leave much credence to the original report.
If I had a dollar for every time “someone familiar with the matter” claimed something of this sort, I’d never have to buy my own coffee again… but what about you? What do you think? I’m pegging this as “plausible but unconfirmed” and suspending judgement pending additional evidence. Sound off in the comments with your thoughts!
