It appears as though the Verizon (CDMA) iPhone 4 has now been unlocked in the US, allowing usage of the new iPhone as a prepaid phone, according to reports from OSXDaily. It’s suggested that certain Cricket stores are performing the unlocking service for a fee of $125, and that the iPhone 4 will then be able to work on either Cricket or MetroPCS networks on a pay-as-you-go basis.
Of course, you’ll have to obtain a Verizon iPhone at a premium price in order to be able to capitalize on this, or buy the phone on contract and pay the Early Termination Fee. Either way, you’re paying a lot of money out of pocket for the phone under this method. The phone must be jailbroken and then taken to a Cricket store for a custom MMS update in order to make it work.
In addition, the CDMA iPhone appears to now be unlocked in the US, as well as China, meaning that further networks (such as Sprint, notably in the US) may eventually officially support the CDMA iPhone in the future. Check out the below embedded YouTube video for more details.
