According to MacRumors, Apple may be about to eliminate boxed retail software from their popular stores, instead focusing on the Mac App Store. It seems obvious that software is quickly moving on to digital distribution, but would this move be too much, too soon for Apple?
Even Apple’s recent plans to start offering Personal Setup for Mac seems to be in line with this goal, however I worry somewhat about the software that is high profile and currently unavailable on the Mac App Store. This would include software by companies like Adobe and Microsoft.
Personally, I don’t see them going all the way with this – but I do see them greatly reducing physically packaged software. As always, only time will tell.
