Warehouse retailer Costco earlier this week announced that it will now accept Apple Pay and other forms of contactless payments at all 750 of its U.S. stores.
Now, retail giant Walmart has taken it upon itself to announce that it won’t be following Costco into the Apple Pay fold, remaining committed to its own Walmart Pay payments platform.
“Walmart Pay is the exclusive form of mobile payment accepted at Walmart and we have no plans for that to change,” said Walmart spokesperson Erin Hulliberger, in a statement provided to MacRumors today.
Walmart Pay is built into the Walmart app for iOS and Android devices, and works at any Walmart checkout lane. The app works with any major credit, debit, pre-paid, or Walmart gift card. Customers scan a QR code displayed at checkout to pay, and an electronic receipt is automatically sent to the app.
Walmart continues to hold the line, despite other major retailers moving to accept Apple’s contactless payments solution. Best Buy, Rite Aid, and Costco now all accept the payments solutions in their stores. And it was recently confirmed that the CVS drug store and 7-Eleven convenience store chains will begin accepting Apple Pay later this year.
