No app ever had a waiting list to use it until Mailbox came along. The wildly popular mail app, which brought along some pretty innovative features to deal with mobile overload has now been taken over by Dropbox, after it agreed to purchase the app’s owner Orchestra Inc for an undisclosed fee.
The 13 Orchestra employees will join Dropbox, and it was confirmed that Mailbox would continue to run as a standalone app.
From the Dropbox Blog:
Today we’re really excited to welcome the Mailbox team to Dropbox. Like many of you, when we discovered Mailbox we fell in love—it was simple, delightful, and beautifully engineered. Many have promised to help us with our overflowing inboxes, but the Mailbox team actually delivered.
We’re all looking forward to making Mailbox even better and getting it into as many people’s hands as possible. There’s so much to do and we’re excited to get started!
Dropbox is currently valued at $4 billion by investors, and the addition of Mailbox, which has 1.3 million on the waiting list, is definitely a huge asset. It is proving immensely popular, and if Dropbox integrates some of the tools into its own app, it could be very interesting indeed.
