Ever since Apple decided to remove Google Maps in favor of their own Maps app in iOS 6, rumors have been buzzing left and right about Google’s apparent plan to release a new native Maps app for iOS – and according to AllThingsD, Google is apparently planning to release the app sometime tonight.
Google plans to release its much-awaited iOS Maps app tonight, according to sources familiar with the matter. […] Google Maps had been pre-installed on the iPhone since the smartphone first launched, but the app was bounced in September with the debut of iOS 6.
iOS 6 Maps has been disappointing for many users, to say the least – Tim Cook even personally apologized for the issues with iOS 6 Maps, admitting that Apple “fell short,” and would be working tirelessly to fix the problems and bring the app up to par. Apple reportedly decided to use their own Maps app instead of Google Maps over a disagreement about voice navigation.
An official Google Maps app for iOS would be welcome news to many users – at least as a temporary solution until Apple fixes their own Maps app (or even a permanent solution if Google really does a great job on the app). We’ll let you know as soon as we hear that the app is officially available – assuming that the report is correct, of course!
