Following a report from last week that Tim Cook asked AT&T to unlock a customers’ iPhone 3GS, AT&T has now announced that they will begin unlocking iPhones for all customers who paid full price for their device, or who have completed their two-year contract.
The carrier issued the following statement to MacRumors:
Beginning Sunday, April 8, we will offer qualifying customers the ability to unlock their AT&T iPhones. The only requirements are that a customer’s account must be in good standing, their device cannot be associated with a current and active term commitment on an AT&T customer account, and they need to have fulfilled their contract term, upgraded under one of our upgrade policies or paid an early termination fee.
Unlocking a device allows customers to use their iPhone on any carrier of their choice, such as T-Mobile, rather than being tied to AT&T. This should come as great news to those looking to move away from AT&T while still being able to use their iPhones.
Customers must be in good standing with AT&T (account cannot be past due) in order to request the unlock.
